The California Business Broker & Education Center Blog is a forum where participants may publically and privately share information related to the private business sales and appraisal industry. Users will be able to exchange resources, build a public or private online library, develop a step-by-step strategy to properly appraise and position a business for sale, and if desired, establish a viable marketplace wherein the sale of a business is the appropriate “next step”! That is to say, a sound business decision is made that has been carefully planned and organized by and for the benefit of all stakeholders involved to systematically avoid the familiar and terminal “knee-jerk reaction to unfavorable conditions" of a sale that far too often characterizes many of those businesses listed for sale in today's market place.

Is this you?

Hello fellow bloggers,

My name is Jorge A. Merino, a California Certified Business Broker and your blog host. Please allow me to extend a warm welcome to the official blog site of the “California Business Broker and Education Center Blog”. The articles, discussions and other resources presented here for your educational enrichment are designed to help you intelligently plan and design an exit strategy for your business.

It goes without saying that not every owner will sell their business and you may very well fit into this category, but if experience has taught us anything, every successful owner considers selling and what is more, plans for that day long before it ever occurs. A transfer of a business may happen in many different ways and for many different reasons. The most common predictors for a sale are known as the dismal “D”s: DEATH, DISABILITY, DISSOLUTION of partners, DEPRESSED market conditions and/or industry segment, and of course there is always DIVORCE. And yet there are still other reasons why a business might sell such as an owner might be “taking chips off the table”, cashing out, retiring, passing the company down to an heir, a changing lifestyle, burned-out, the list goes on and on…The cold reality remains, you are susceptible to anyone of these reasons at any given moment. Sadly, too many business owners fail to educate themselves and to plan accordingly and the results for this negligence can be far reaching and costly. In my years of brokering business sales I have never met a business owner whom after years of dedicating “blood, sweat and tears” to growing a business was satisfied with having to sell under financial duress or even worse closing the doors to what could have been a saleable business. This is not why you went into business in the first place…don’t let this happen to you! Prepare to sell and if you never have to travel that road, great! But, if you do, you’ll rest easy knowing you have prepared to properly position your company within the competitive market place and command top dollar value.

As a final note, you’ll find that the resources presented come from a variety of sources and draw from different perspectives from different professionals. The articles presented are just a starting point, the questions and dialogue we share will be the true gem of this blog, so please do not hesitate to share your insights. If your question or contribution is of a sensitive nature, do not hesitate to email it directly. Welcome once again to the “California Business Broker & Education Center Blog” and may your learning experiences lead to intelligent planning and bold action!
